Lake browning impacts community structure and essential fatty acid content of littoral invertebrates in boreal lakes

چکیده
Abstract Many lakes in the northern hemisphere are browning due to increasing concentrations of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The consequences lake littoral invertebrates, however, not fully understood. We analyzed community structure and fatty acid (FA) profiles invertebrates humic (DOC-rich) clear-water Eastern Finland. found higher abundance chironomids (Diptera: Chironomidae) compared lakes, whereas stoneflies (Plecoptera) mayflies (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) were more abundant lakes. Taxon explained 65% differences FA composition invertebrates. However, proportion content polyunsaturated FAs several taxa significantly Our results reveal both nutritional quality for fish between

Activity and Diversity of Methanotrophs in a Littoral Wetland of an Eutrophic Boreal Freshwater Lake
Most of methane (CH4) emitted from lakes may be derived from their littoral wetlands. In the surface layers of wetlands, aerobic CH4 oxidizing bacteria, known as methanotrophs, consume a large part of the CH4 produced in deeper anoxic layers, having thus major atmospheric importance. However, the characteristics of the methanotroph community and its capacity to withstand environmental changes i...
متن کاملCoupling of boreal forests and lakes: Effects of conifer pollen on littoral communities
Conifer pollen deposition is a visually striking spring event in boreal lakes, representing a potentially major allochthonous input of limiting nutrients. We conducted a lake survey and mesocosm experiment at the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario to test the hypothesis that jack pine (Pinus banksiana) pollen inputs subsidize littoral nutrient levels and stimulate algal growth and ...
متن کاملThe effect of lake browning and respiration mode on the burial and fate of carbon and mercury in the sediment of two boreal lakes
In many northern temperate regions, the water color of lakes has increased over the past decades (“lake browning”), probably caused by an increased export of dissolved organic matter from soils. We investigated if the increase in water color in two lakes in Norway has resulted in increased burial of organic carbon (OC) and mercury (Hg) in the sediments and if the Hg was prone to methylation. La...
متن کاملBacterial community structure of acid-impacted lakes: what controls diversity?
Although it is recognized that acidification of freshwater systems results in decreased overall species richness of plants and animals, little is known about the response of aquatic microbial communities to acidification. In this study we examined bacterioplankton community diversity and structure in 18 lakes located in the Adirondack Park (in the state of New York in the United States) that we...
متن کاملComparing Effects of Lake- and Watershed-Scale Influences on Communities of Aquatic Invertebrates in Shallow Lakes
Constraints on lake communities are complex and are usually studied by using limited combinations of variables derived from measurements within or adjacent to study waters. While informative, results often provide limited insight about magnitude of simultaneous influences operating at multiple scales, such as lake- vs. watershed-scale. To formulate comparisons of such contrasting influences, we...
